Two “reality” television programs on aspects of HIV and AIDS geared toward youth under age 30 in the DRC. Produced by Search for Common Ground (SFCG) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tosalel’ango! (Let’s Do It!) is a popular 30-minute reality television program in French and Lingala that encourages youth to try and better their communities. After receiving written statements from young people that describe their vision of the change they will promote on a given issue, SFCG selects “challengers” who will take these on and films them as they try to succeed. In collaboration with C-Change, SFCG produced two episodes that center on HIV and AIDS. In the first, challengers went to the Kasumbalesa border crossing between Lubumbashi and Zambia, where HIV prevalence is high and there are large numbers of long-distance traders, truckers from southern Africa, and sex workers. The challengers aimed to raise awareness among these groups of the need to get tested for HIV. As they worked to increase demand, they discovered a great need for advocacy to increase the supply of testing services. The challengers in the second episode aimed to encourage youth between ages 14 and 20 to become engaged in the response to HIV. They eventually organized a sensitization campaign in a secondary school in Kindele, Katanga Province, highlighting the need for collaboration between students and school officials in order to share information and raise awareness about HIV prevention.
